Citizen project - supporting polar quest

The students of Exmouth Community School have decided their Citizen Project will compare peoples views about “what makes a good Citizen” in Exmouth, Devon and in Resolute Bay, the High Arctic. They hope to improve the understanding of other cultures within the local Exmouth Community.

Developed by The Trident Trust with support from the Deutsche Bank, the citizen project is now in its third year of helping schools deliver the community project and social enterprise requirements of the Citizenship curriculum The Citizenship website provides an exciting and interactive medium for students to identify a community project and plan, record and evaluate their role with in it. It also gives young people access to funding to support their projects. The website has been designed to help students collect evidence towards their Citizenship studies and is accredited by ASDAN. Students have demonstrated their ability to identify real and sometimes high profile issues in their communities and take real action both locally and globally.
The Polar Watch bid for funding for a project for ‘ community based or a social enterprise’ .
Our project involves comparing what makes a good citizen in the UK to what makes a good citizen in Resolute Bay, North-West Canada. We will be doing questionnaires, interviews, videos and write ups from citizens in both countries and comparing them. For instance, we are thinking of interviewing our Principal, Mr. Alexander here, then interviewing his counterpart in Canada, to see the difference.
Our project began by completing a planning proposal through the Citizen Project website. This entailed giving details about what we were aiming to achieve, who was involved and what their role is and also setting ourselves time deadlines for completing the project.
There are four of us involved in this project, Matthew Kain, Kizzie Peters, Katrina Taylor and James Kelly. Kizzie and Katrina have drawn up the questionnaire we are going to use while Matt and James are taking responsibility for carrying out the interviews which will be recorded on a video camera. James was particularly keen to get involved the camera work.
We will shortly be undertaking some ICT training to make sure that we know how to use the camera properly and are able to send back photos and clips from our base in the Canadian High Arctic at Resolute Bay.
We have also met with Tessa Mostyn from Citizen Project, who has kindly helped to fund our project, as well as agreeing to give us some presents to take up to the school children in Resolute Bay. We also hope to have our pictures taken with Citizen Project photos at the North Pole. We are also hopeful that other people from around the globe will also complete the questionnaire to find out what cultural differences there are from one country to another.
Once we have got all the questionnaires filled in we will analyse the results and publish them along with any useful video clips through the Citizen project website. If you wish to take part in the project and fill out the questionnaire please download the questionnaire and email it back to us at polar.watch@exmouthcollege.devon.sch.uk.
