Polar watch expedition

Introduction

A once in a lifetime experience for the students.  They will be flown into Resolute Bay a small settlement with just 250 inhabitants (not including the polar bears!) and work closely with students from Qarmartalik School and the local community:

  • Science at Resolute
  • Tour and presentation on work of the weather station and Scott Polar Research station

Tuesday 25th April

  • Anglican Inuit Church Service in Inuktitut
  • Trek onto sea ice to explore wider area and return to BC for lunch

Wednesday 26th April

  • Day spent in school with Inuit students
  • Inuit Sport Games (boys)
  • District Education Authority Induction

Thursday 27th April

  • Equipment/clothing prep.
  • Flight to North Pole to meet up with expedition and flight to Beechy Island for service

Friday 28th April

  • North Pole Team talk.
  • Komatik ride on Arctic Ocean
  • 1/2 Day trek to Signal Hill.
  • Igloo building with local Inuit elder(1 1/2 hrs)
  • Overnight sleep in Igloo (girls)

Saturday 29th April

  • Traditional seal hunt with Inuit
  • Polar Bear spotting.
  • Traditional Inuit Cooking with an Elder- Bannock Making (girls)
  • Local Radio - Farewell Show ( Brian / Tracey)
  • Host: George Eckalook (Hamlet Councilor)
  • Overnight sleep in Igloo (boys)
